چکیده

High spatial and spectral resolution refl ectance data acquired by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) instrument reveal the presence of H2Oand SiOH-bearing phases on the Martian surface. The spectra are most consistent with opaline silica and glass altered to various degrees, confi rming predictions based on geochemical experiments and models that amorphous silica should be a common weathering product of the basaltic Martian crust. These materials are associated with hydrated Fe sulfates, including H3O-bearing jarosite, and are found in fi nely stratifi ed deposits exposed on the fl oor of and on the plains surrounding the Valles Marineris canyon system. Stratigraphic relationships place the formation age of these deposits in the late Hesperian or possibly the Amazonian, implying that aqueous alteration continued to be an important and regionally extensive process on Mars during that time. on March 21, 2011 geology.gsapubs.org Downloaded from

Silica deposits on Mars with features resembling hot spring biosignatures at El Tatio in Chile

The Mars rover Spirit encountered outcrops and regolith composed of opaline silica (amorphous SiO2·nH2O) in an ancient volcanic hydrothermal setting in Gusev crater. An origin via either fumarole-related acid-sulfate leaching or precipitation from hot spring fluids was suggested previously. However, the potential significance of the characteristic nodular and mm-scale digitate opaline silica st...

Silica in a Mars analog environment: Ka’u Desert, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

[1] Airborne Visible/Near‐Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data acquired over the Ka’u Desert are atmospherically corrected to ground reflectance and used to identify the mineralogic components of relatively young basaltic materials, including 250–700 and 200–400 year old lava flows, 1971 and 1974 flows, ash deposits, and solfatara incrustations. To provide context, a geologic surface uni...

Mineralogy in the Martian Hydrosphere

Introduction: Mineral equilibria provide predic-tors of properties important in aqueous geochemistry (solubility, freezing, precipitation, dissolution, etc.). Prediction works well where groundwater is well above freezing, but less so where only thin films of cold water and ice are present. Calculations are also limited where water/rock ratios are small, the general case on Mars. On Mars many m...

Identification, distribution and possible origins of sulfates in Capri Chasma (Mars), inferred from CRISM data

[1] CRISM is a hyperspectral imager onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO; NASA, 2005) which has been acquiring data since November 2006 and has targeted hydrated minerals previously detected by OMEGA (Mars Express; ESA, 2003). The present study focuses on hydrated minerals detected with CRISM at high spatial resolution in the vicinity of Capri Chasma, a canyon of the Valles Marineris sy...

Silica coatings in the Ka’u Desert, Hawaii, a Mars analog terrain: A micromorphological, spectral, chemical, and isotopic study

[1] High‐silica materials have been observed on Mars, both from orbit by the CRISM spectrometer and in situ by the Spirit rover at Gusev Crater. These observations potentially imply a wet, geologically active Martian surface. To understand silica formation on Mars, it is useful to study analogous terrestrial silica deposits. We studied silica coatings that occur on the 1974 Kilauea flow in the ...
